INT. Story Nightclub – Nightlife Club, DeadMau5 plays 3-Hour setlist to close out Art Basel
It was about time ! After the many live Meowingtons and Creamfields sessions at home, on youtube, I was excited about my first Deadmau5 show. I might have watched him in 2009 at a Surfcomber party, when I ditched my job and hustled to Miami Music Week 2009, asked the promoter for a promoter bottle, partied till 11pm, slept at a friends airbnb, then partied till 11 am at Space Miami. But that was back then, and this was the Art Basel closing party at Story Nightclub.
When Deadmau5 stepped into the DJ area, the time was 1:30 am, fans were missing, but excited, phones immediately switched to video mode, and the club illuminated with lighting effects. Deadmau5 began his setlist with the single. Without wearing his mouse head, the loopy hard strings and long bass drops energized the crowd. An hour into his setlist, the piercing sounds Mau5trap fans love so much began blasting through the speakers.
There was 8 VIP tables in front of the DJ area, this is where clubgoers that spend over $1000-$5000 dollars sit. At one point, bottle waitress’ must have walked “12 Ace of Spade” bottles to the birthday table of a VIP party. “I love”, an idolized, club bottle run, they livin up the crowd, gives partygoers added entertainment while they are dancing.
The other element added to this night was when Deadmau5 allowed fans to wear his black chrome Deadmau5 head, that was also illuminated by light. I was able to catch video of a fan wearing the head, the fan also had friends that tried it on and snapped photos. The Mau5trap associate securing the head kept on passing it around the club, until it made it’s way back to Deadmau5.
It was 2 hour into his set, I still knew all the words to the songs, “coincidence.” At this point my phone’s memory was filled with photos and videos, and I felt like having a corona with lime. So i turned my phone off, it had low battery and “Strobe” would need to be recorded at the end.
It was the end of the night and the long “stobe” lead began, this was the value moment partygoers were waiting for, as soon as the riser hit, I literally jumped out of my shoes and “Woo’d.” It really was a dope setlist Deadmau5 performed and “Strobe” topped off the Art Basel night.
